Dust Control in Quarrying & Surface Mining

Why Dust Control is Essential in Quarrying and Surface Mining

Dust control is critical at almost every stage of quarrying operations because material extraction, processing, and handling generate high levels of airborne dust. By implementing effective dust management strategies, mining operations can protect workers, reduce environmental impact, and maintain operational efficiency while ensuring regulatory compliance. Several activities in quarrying contribute to dust generation, including:

  • Drilling and Blasting: Rock drilling and blasting release large amounts of dust, including respirable crystalline silica (RCS), which poses serious health risks.
  • Crushing and Screening: Crushing rocks and screening aggregates produce fine particles that easily become airborne.
  • Material Handling: Conveyors, transfer points, and loaders generate fugitive dust during material movement.
  • Loading and Hauling: Trucks and loaders create dust clouds, especially on unpaved haul roads.
  • Stockpiling: Wind and mechanical action displace fine particles from exposed stockpiles.
  • Processing Plants: Grinding, milling, and secondary processing generate fine, respirable dust that requires active capture.

Integrating dust collectors into these operations improves air quality, enhances operational efficiency, and ensures compliance with workplace health, safety, and environmental standards. This proactive approach protects workers, surrounding communities, and the environment while reinforcing the quarry’s sustainability and reputation.

Key Benefits of Effective Dust Control in Quarrying and Surface Mining

Implementing a comprehensive dust management plan delivers measurable benefits:

Protecting Worker Health

  • Reduces exposure to silica dust, preventing silicosis, COPD, and lung cancer
  • Minimises eye, nose, and throat irritation
  • Supports worker comfort, efficiency, and productivity

Enhancing Workplace Safety

  • Improves visibility in dusty areas, reducing vehicle and machinery accidents
  • Prevents settled dust from making surfaces slippery, reducing tripping hazards

Improving Operational Efficiency

  • Keeps machinery cleaner, reducing maintenance costs and downtime
  • Prevents product contamination, ensuring high-quality aggregate

Ensuring Environmental Compliance

  • Maintains compliance with air quality standards and particulate emission limits
  • Prevents dust from spreading to local ecosystems, protecting soil, flora, and fauna

Preserving Community Relations

  • Limits dust escaping quarry boundaries, avoiding complaints and reputational risk
  • Supports social license to operate by demonstrating responsible environmental management

Adapting to Climate and Weather

  • Controls dust in windy conditions, during dry seasons, or drought periods
  • Ensures dust control measures remain effective under changing environmental conditions

JMS F-Series.
Fixed Dust Collectors.

Fixed Unit Dust Collectors

Our JMS F-Series fixed-unit dust collectors offer a long-term and cost-effective solution to dust and fume control and are designed to handle high-volume dust loads. Our modular design provides flexibility in the dust control units’ size relative to the required air volumes. Our engineering team can use site and process drawings to determine airflow requirements and design ducting configuration to achieve a total dust control solution.

Fixed-unit dust collectors are best suited to permanent operations where dust collection needs are relatively static. Ducting can extract dust from multiple dust-generating points and draw dirty air back to a single dust collector for efficient extraction and exhaust of clean air back to the environment.

JMS M-Series.
Mobile Dust Collectors.

JMS-30-MDT - Mobile Dust Collector Image

Our JMS M-Series mobile dust collectors offer air volumes from 6 m3/s (12,000 CFM) to 60 m3/s (125,000 CFM) and are available as diesel, electric, or hybrid solutions. Skid-mounted units are designed when dust collection needs are relatively static; however, track-mounted units can be used to easily move along with dust-generating processes or for temporary works.

Mobile dust collectors are better suited than a fixed unit in situations that require flexibility, portability, and adaptability to changing operating conditions. They are also suitable for temporary or short-term projects and mobile quarrying operation (e.g. alongside mobile crushers and screens).

Grydale Custom Onboard Dust Extraction System for Vermeer T1255 Surface Miner

Using our expertise in dust control, we have developed and patented a range of onboard dust control solutions for excavation equipment, including Surface Miners, large track trenchers, Skid Steers, and Posi Track Loaders. The onboard dust control solutions are effective for dealing with residual dust and debris and offer a fuel, emissions, and labour-efficient solution when space constraints prevent the use of a trail-behind dust system.

Our Experience. Dust Control for Surface Mining.

Dust Control Solutions for Surface Miners

When drilling and blasting becomes unsuitable due to excessive dust or vibration affecting nearby communities, many mining operations turn to surface miners to produce aggregate. These mobile units use a cutting drum to mechanically excavate materials, significantly reducing dust, noise, and vibration compared with traditional methods.

An additional advantage is that surface miners can be paired with mobile dust collectors or onboard dust extraction systems to capture dust at its source, improving worker safety and environmental compliance.

Grydale Dust Collectors for Surface Mining

Grydale mobile dust collectors can be connected to surface miners using flexible ducting, providing targeted dust control directly at the point of material excavation. Our patented track-mounted machines are fully remote-controlled, allowing operators to manage dust extraction from a safe distance.

Onboard Dust Extraction Solutions

Grydale has also developed custom, internationally patented onboard dust extraction systems for surface miners, including models such as Vermeer T1255 and Tesmec EVO 1475. We are actively developing additional systems to support a wider range of surface mining equipment, ensuring effective dust control across multiple machines and work environments.
